Google smartwatch: Will it be an 'iPhone moment' for wearables?

CNET is reporting  that Google and LG are about to jump into the smartwatch game together.

Google is set to unveil plans for its smartwatch-centric operating system in March, likely in a blog post, according to a person familiar with its plans. The actual smartwatch itself will make its debut at its Google I/O conference in June, the person said.
But there's a reason wearables have drawn the attention of tech companies: the market is estimated to be worth $19 billion by 2018.
Google’s smartwatch will revolve around Google Now’s assistant features with voice playing a major role in how users interact with the product. Reportedly HTC has a smartwatch in the works that will include a Google Now experience, so it is only natural to assume that Google will do the same. The features coming from Google Now to a smartwatch will most likely be the use of notifications, reminders, weather and traffic, sports scores, events and so much more. Google reportedly is banking on its ability to make a watch that is less an expensive accessory to a smartphone and more a device with a unique utility in its own right. But i think that the cross-platform aspect is really important, like Pebble(With Android and IPhone) or sony smartwatch ( android v4.0)

What Google should focus ON:
  • Battery lifeMain problem with wearable are are their battery like. Weather its Google Glass or Galaxy Gear they need to be charged in a day or two. Sony smartwatch and Pebble promises about a week battery life but that not enough .  Alternative method of charging should be found .
  • Design: Google has done a very good design with Google Glass and the look of new Pebble Steel is also good. A lightweight body, quality of the screen and a curved display will work. So it should take the design language with manufacturer seriously.
  • Killer feature: Reportedly it will have Google Now functionality(which is likely to happen) but it it should have some focus on Health and Fitness as it will be most useful feature for smartwatch. Act as remote to TV, mini controller for Google Glass or Phone.
  • Latest Android: Unlike Google Glass which run on Ice Cream sandwich(v4.0) it should runs on android kitkat or the latest android(repotly Android 4.5). Latest OS will allow the watch to use more sensors and will reduce the battery consumption.
  • Pricing: Last but not the least to make it a hit I think Google should learn from its Nexus series. Nexus pricing has made the nexus phones and tablets so hit.
Do you think Google is really win the wearable competition though its late in the game? What do you want your smartwatch to be capable of doing? Let us know down below

What is Nokia Android Phone? (Updated)

Update 3:
Nokia is officially launching its very first Android devices, known as the X , the X+ and the XL on stage at its annual Mobile World Congress press conference. Nokia says will give the advantage of the Android ecosystem, but with a "differentiated experience." So far, Here Maps, MixRadio, Skype and Outlook will be offered. You can access the Nokia and third party stores using the devices, but not Google Play, obviously. The Nokia X is available immediately, in countries including  India, for 89 Euros, while the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL will be available in the second quarter of this year for 99 Euros and 109 Euros respectively.

Update 2:

  • Nokia just change its profile colour to green on all its social networks.(not quite as android)
      • Update Nokia has reverted back to its signature Blue colour.
  • Nokia also send its invitation for MWC some weeks back which was also green. So its could be either green = environment  or green = android .
  • Vietnamese online retailer price the Nokia Normandy near the price tag of  $110
  •  Smartphone vendors pay a license fee to Google to get services like the Google’s Play app store, Google Maps, Gmail and others. However, Nokia won't use any of Google’s services and will instead implement its own and Microsoft services, which means it won't have to pay Google any licensing fee.
  •  Nokia has already developed its own app store for the platform(NO Google Playstore and IT APPSwhich already have most of the top 100 apps on the store.
Update 1:
Its expected to be introduce in MWC and to be launch in month of March. Expected price is sub $100.It is also rumor that the Nokia X will come in 6 different color options. The Nokia X embodies Nokia's Asha line design language A polycarbonate body is what encases the device within, and even signature Asha cues, like the left chevron (the '<' symbol) capacitive button are making an appearance. In fact, being likened to the Asha line has given rise to a an alternative theory that the Nokia X may be, after all, a new generation of Asha.

Much have been said, heard and read about Nokia's Android phone codenamed 'Normandy' and it could soon be a reality now. The handset is designed as the next step in low-end phones from the Finnish smartphone maker. We know that Nokia has been testing “Normandy” with a special modified variant of Android, like to what Amazon does with its Kindle Fire line.

UI of the Phone

Specification Known

According to the Vietnamese online listing, the alleged Nokia X will come with a 4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480 x 854 (FWVGA) pixels; 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor; 5-megapixel rear camera; microSD card support and running Android 4.4 KitKat.Further, the listing seemingly confirms that the rumoured Nokia X will come with dual-SIM support, while connectivity options including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE, AGPS and Micro-USB. Other specifications include 4GB of inbuilt storage and Adreno 302 GPU.Its definitely true that this device is a budget phone and will run highly modified version of android kitkat which look likes windows phone but will let users access the Google Play Store.
BUT what exactly is Nokia doing with this android phone when their Mobile business is going to sell to the microsoft.
  • I think Nokia is doing this to ensure that the deal between Microsoft and Nokia don't scrape off as microsoft will be afraid that its ONLY windows OEM will shift to android.(which is most likely not to happen)
  • Also as from the leaks we have seen that the UI phone is similar to the Windows phone so I may be possible that microsoft is only doing this to let people experience windows UI but with android under hood. This will ensure that people will get to know windows phone better and in future people will buy windows phone .

Lenovo’s acquisition of Motorola explained

Lenovo signed an agreement to acquire Motorola for $2.91 billion from Google, which is selling it at a massive loss after buying Motorola for $12.5 billion less than two years ago. So what does this deal mean for all the three companies involved?

For Google

  • At $12.5 billion Motorola’s acquisition was an expensive mistake for Google. Google had hoped that Motorola’s patents would save it and its Android hardware partners, who were taken to the courts for patent infringement by companies of Nokia, Microsoft and Apple. But, this all end with a blow as most of the patent google acquires were standard patents. Through which google could not save itself.
  • Google at that time was mainly interested in the company's patent portfolio. Now, Google is selling its subsidiary handset business, which has been losing hundreds of millions each quarter since the purchase.
  • Google will hold on to Motorola's R&D department headed by former DARPA Director, Regina Dugan. That department was working on future products including smart tattoos, smart pills and even a modular phone codenamed Ara.
  •  It will also ensure that maor android OEM's don't shift to alternative OS like samsung with windows or Tizen

For Motorola

  • The deal is a mixed bag for Motorola. It would no longer have a "a google company" mark with it. Motorola is most likely to lose all the Googleness under Lenovo.
  • On a positive note, Motorola will finally be able to scale up with Lenovo. The Chinese electronics giant already has a global sales and distribution network. On the smartphone side, it has a thriving business in China, India and Indonesia – some of the largest and fastest growing smartphone markets in the world.
  • Nothing going to change much for motorola as motorola brand will not be discontinued

For Lenovo

  • The company that gains the most in this deal is Lenovo  which at $2.91 billion is a bargain. Even the terms – about $660 million in cash and $750 million in shares at the time of closing the deal and the remaining $1.5 billion spread over three years.
  • Apart from the financial aspect, Lenovo also gets a great engineering team as well as license to Motorola’s patents that Google would retain and 2,000 patents it will receive. It will also get to keep the trademark and copyright for the Motorola brand name.
  • Acquiring Motorola will also give Lenovo access into the US and Latin American markets, where it does not have a strong smartphone presence at the moment. The deal could catapult Lenovo as the third largest smartphone vendor after Samsung and Apple, overtaking Huawei and LG.
  • Its all depend on lenovo how it use Motorola’s relationships with carriers its manufacturing plants and  its patents.

Will You still Buy motorola products after the acquisition ? Let us know what to feel about this deal in comment below?
